The statement “sitting is the new smoking”, which makes it clear that the lack of exercise has a negative effect on the body, is repeated.

Daily exercise has many advantages: Improves health, reduces stress, increases concentration and leads to a positive mood.

Office workers are often forced to sit at their desks for several hours every day. Of course you can also use a standing desk, which is definitely an improvement over sitting. However, this is also a kind of “rest position” which can also have a negative effect on one’s own health.

It would be best to keep moving at your desk. One solution is to combine a standing desks with special (slower) treadmills. The disadvantage here is that you are forced to walk. If you walk to slowly, you automatically move away from your desk.

The “Work-and-Go” project tries to offer a better solution: A running surface that reacts directly to the user and can be used intuitively. If you stop, the surface should also stop, if you want to walk while working, the surface should move exactly in such a way that the position to the desk does not change.

The solution is a large wheel with a tread on the inside. The wheel must be large enough for the user and the desk. The construction of the wheel was inspired by a “do-it-yourself” manual in which the maker constructed a wheel made out of wood: www.instructables.com/id/Hamster-Wheel-Standing-Desk/

Of course, the wheel should not simply be copied. The goal of the “Work-and-Go” project was to improve the wheel and the desk in many points:

Larger diameter for a better walking experience

Better bearings for the quietest possible operation

Wider walking surface for better use of a second screen

Semi-transparent running surface for a better “view”

Adaptive brake to limit maximum speed

At the end of the day you take a small step and literally get out of the hamster wheel

The result is a new and unique way of experiencing daily desk work.
The user quickly gets used to the characteristics of the wheel and no longer actively thinks about his own walking movement. It doesn’t tell you how fast you have to go. The wheel adapts itself to your personal walking pace. You can also walk backwards or let the wheel oscillate by shifting the centre of gravity.

With the “Work-and-Go” you can work the whole day and at the same time you are always on the move!

Many thanks to the team of Metallbau Glanzner for the support during the production and assembly of the wheel!

In the future, further articles will appear presenting the individual tools used in the development of the “Work-and-Go” project.
